Manulife’s annual blood–donation drive for Red Cross gets boost

About 600 enthusiastic blood donors support the event

Hong Kong— Manulife (International) Limited (MIL) ran a company-wide blood drive at its office premises, which was held from May 29th to May 31st, in support of the Hong Kong Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service’s blood donation program. Blood donation centres were set up at three locations - Manulife Plaza in Causeway Bay, Manulife Tower in North Point and Manulife Provident Funds Place in Jordan. This year, about 600 blood donors, comprising staff and insurance/financial advisors, volunteered to give blood at the blood donation centres.

“Manulife has been supporting the program for more than 25 years, and it reflects our firm belief in ongoing community involvement. On another level, this initiative also helps spread the message about the constant need for blood to save lives,” said Michael Huddart, Executive Vice President and General Manager for Hong Kong, MIL. “It gives me great pleasure to see many of our staff and advisors support this meaningful cause, which demonstrates our strong sense of active contribution to the community,” added Mr. Huddart.

The corporate blood drive is an annual community initiative of Manulife. Since 1979, around 8,000 donors from Manulife have donated blood to the Hong Kong Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service.

Dr. Lee Cheuk Kwong, Senior Medical Officer of the Hong Kong Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service said, “We are grateful to Manulife for their long time support. We hope more people who are eligible to come forward to help those who are in need of blood transfusion.”

Each Manulife blood donors received a book as a token of gratitude for their volunteer action. The book is a real life inspiration story about a woman who has cancer and fights the disease with admirable spirits.

The blood donation drive was organised by Manulife Recreation Club, which was set up in 1975 to coordinate recreational and welfare activities as well as community services for the company’s staff and insurance/financial advisors.
