Manulife Equestrian Course Brings Young Dreams to Life

Summer training program helps heighten awareness of historic upcoming horse event in Hong Kong – And gives underprivileged kids thrill of a lifetime

Hong Kong— More than 100 children, aged from six to 14, enjoyed the never-to-be-forgotten experience of an Equestrian Summer Training Program, sponsored by Manulife (International) Limited (MIL) and organised by the Changing Young Lives Foundation (CYLF).

The training program was designed to give underprivileged children in Hong Kong a basic knowledge of horse-riding while at the same time heightening awareness of equestrianism – and of the Olympic Games themselves – among the wider community, given that Manulife is the official Worldwide Life-Insurance Partner.

The Olympic equestrian events will be held in Hong Kong next year – the first time it will ever have hosted a sport in the Games.

At the closing ceremony of the Summer Training Program, attended by Manulife Executive Vice President and General Manager, Hong Kong, Michael Huddart, Assistant Vice President, Corporate Communications, Helena Lee, and Olympic “Friendly” mascot-figure “Huanhuan”, the kids were presented with a certificate and souvenirs. A video of the training program was also shown to recap the happy moments of this unique experience for them.

Mr. Huddart said, “We are very proud to have sponsored this event. It exemplified Manulife’s Olympic marketing theme, which is ‘Bringing Dreams to Life’, in that it made the dreams of a lot of underprivileged children come true. It also helped spread the Olympic spirit in Hong Kong and make people more aware of the sheer joy of competition that the Games represent.”

Held over three separate Fridays during the kids’ summer holidays at the Hong Kong Riding Skill Academy, the program involved lectures on horses, visits to stables, photo-taking opportunities with former champion horses, horse care and feeding tips, and instruction on how to mount and how to ride.

Marcia Aw, Executive Director of the CYLF, said that the program fulfilled the charity’s mission to “change the lives of underprivileged children for the better and help them acquire the knowledge and skills to live a happy and meaningful life”.

She added, “We are extremely grateful to Manulife for having had the vision and generosity to collaborate with us in this enriching experience, which will not only give these children a greater understanding of what equestrianism involves, but will be something they will remember for the rest of their lives.”
