Manulife Donates Cognitive Exercise Equipment to Alzheimer’s Care Centre

Assisting Efforts to Create Awareness on Alzheimer’s Disease

Kuala Lumpur – Manulife Insurance (Malaysia) Berhad (Manulife Malaysia) today contributed cognitive exercise equipment valued at RM12,200 to the Alzheimer’s Care Centre as part of the Company’s long-term commitment to support the communities in which it operates.

The equipment was handed over by Mr Peter Robertson, President and Chief Executive Office of Manulife Malaysia to Y. Bhg Datuk Dr. Yim Khai Kee, Chairman, Executive Committee of Alzheimer’s Disease Foundation Malaysia at a presentation ceremony.

The Alzheimer’s Care Centre is established, funded and run by the Alzheimer’s Disease Foundation Malaysia.

“There are approximately 10,000 people currently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease in the country. However, as this illness normally afflicts people above the age of 65, for many of whom the disease remains undetected and therefore untreated. That’s why we felt it important to help raise awareness of this disease and the great work that the Alzheimer’s Care Centre is doing. We hope our contribution will help expand the Centre’s Therapeutic Activities and Reminiscence Therapy efforts and help the Centre to continue to provide much needed care to residents afflicted by this crippling disease,” said Mr. Robertson.

“We are extremely grateful to receive Manulife’s thoughtful contribution. Alzheimer’s Disease affects the functioning of the brain and such equipment is important in helping to stimulate brain activity which we hope will slow the decline of mental functions,” said Y. Bhg Datuk Dr. Yim.

“Alzheimer’s Disease needs greater awareness in Malaysia. Many people do not receive the care they need as family members may just assume the symptoms to be part of growing old,” added Y. Bhg Datuk Dr. Yim.

The contribution is part of Manulife Malaysia’s commitment to supporting community projects. Other initiatives have included providing assistance to underprivileged children and to the elderly to help improve their quality of life.

Mr Robertson said: “Manulife’s corporate giving goes beyond monetary contributions. We want all our contributions to be meaningful to the recipients and that’s why we take great steps to ensure we donate what is really needed and for the Alzheimer’s Care Centre, it was this specialized equipment.”

The Azheimer’s Care Centre also provides respite to caregivers of those suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). Y. Bhg Datuk Dr Yim said that it can be extremely tiring looking after AD patients and the Centre accepts patients who are dropped off for a few hours or a day for the caregivers to have some time for themselves.

The presentation ceremony was attended by the Manulife Malaysia staff and agency members, the Executive Committee members of Alzheimer’s Disease Foundation Malaysia and family members of residents at the Centre.
