Hong Kong - In a unique ceremony today, Manulife opened the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong (SEHK) by striking the gong that signals the start of the day’s trading.
This was to celebrate Manulife Financial’s 125th anniversary as a strong, reliable, trustworthy and forward-thinking Canada-based global company. Manulife opened the market at the New York Stock Exchange earlier this week, and similar ceremonies will be held on June 22 at stock exchanges in Toronto and Manila, where Manulife Financial is listed.
Robert A. Cook, Senior Executive Vice President and General Manager, Asia, Manulife Financial, said: “Manulife has the longest continuous operations in Asia of any international life insurer and we were also the first to list in Hong Kong, which reflects our forward-thinking approach. With our pan-Asia operations and successful growth strategy, we expect the region to be the Company’s global growth engine for many years to come.”
Michael Huddart, Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer for Manulife Hong Kong, made a brief speech at the ceremony, in which he noted that “few contemporary companies can boast that their history straddles from the 19th to the 21st centuries. Manulife has not only become one of the world’s leading financial institutions, but based on these solid foundations, we are growing stronger every day.”
“The development of Manulife Hong Kong has mirrored that of the global company,” he continued. “From the commencement of its operations in this part of the world in 1897, we are now a renowned financial company in the territory, with more than 1,200 staff and 5,000 agents serving more than 1.7 million customers. Looking ahead, we will continue to provide reliable and trustworthy services to them — and to all who follow them.”
